The comment system is up! Please let me know what you think of the articles I post. Whether it's positive or negative, I want to hear it all. Please keep it constructive though. I don't need to be cursed out!

I wasn't sure if I wanted to setup the system so that I had to approve all comments before they went live or if I wanted to add a CAPTCHA system to keep the spam-bots away. For now the comments go live immediately. If I get junk, I will try to get it down as quickly as possible. If I am inundated with junk, I will have to put some other system in place.

Happy thanksgiving!

Your Baby is Ugly: What Is a Landing Page?

I have been been reading Landing Page Optimization by Tim Ash. It's a good read with lots of great info on how to optimize your web pages to increase conversion rates from web visitors. A topic that I've been spending a lot of time on. My favorite phrase in the book is 'your baby is ugly'. Tim uses the phrase as a blunt way of letting you know your current landing pages are not working and that it's time to start optimizing.

You may have noticed some changes around here recently. I am working on trying to make this website a little more community-oriented. To that end, I have added a feature allowing you to rate the articles I've written and share articles on the many social networking sites out there.

I plan to add a comment feature in the near future.

I try to include articles I believe may be helpful for small businesses with questions about specific problems and the technology and know-how that can help you solve them. Of course I can't think of everything, so you're feedback is very helpful. Please feel free to send me any feedback/questions/ideas through my contact form.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is not the Holy Grail of web traffic that many web designers will make you think it is. In fact, you can create a website that ranks well in search engines without any emphasis on SEO.

We, at Dynamic Data Design, love Joomla. But what is Joomla? Here's a good overview I came upon on YouTube demonstrating some of the basic features of a fresh Joomla install. Keep in mind Joomla does much more than what's shown here, but this is a start:

There has been a lot of talk about Content Management Systems (CMS) for the past few years, but there are still many people out there with many questions concerning CMSs. How is a CMS different from a static website? What types of CMSs are there? How much do they cost?

First Step to Improving SEO - Know Your Visitors

Many people I speak to are interested in increasing traffic to their website. My first question is 'where are you getting your traffic from now? Hello? Are you still there?' Then comes the response, 'how do I know that?'.

Before doing any kind of search engine optimization it is first necessary to do some analysis of your current website statistics. Most web hosting companies provide statistics packages at no additional charge. To find out if you have access to web statistics try logging into your web control panel. Poke around a little and see if you can find something. No? Well, the good news is you're not out of luck. There are a bunch of good free solutions out there.

We all know backing up your data is important, but why is it that so many of us still don't do it on a regular basis? Maybe because it's tedious to make sure you have all the right files zipped and then move them to some external media. I used to use ZipBackup. While the program greatly simplified the task of creating separate backup sets (a full set and an incremental set - only the files that have changed since the previous backup) even after setting ZipBackup to run on a schedule, I often ended up with numerous zip files on my desktop that I never got around to burning to a CD. This method would not have done me a lot of good had my hard drive crashed. Fortunately, I have been spared thus far.

Proprietary Software By Any Other Name

I just finished reading an article in Wired magazine about Apple. It was a good article that discussed how the success of Apple can be linked to Steve Jobs, his unwillingness to bend, and the Area 51 level of secrecy surrounding their products. I have always had a certain fondness for Macs. In fact, the first computer I remember using was a Mac Plus. It is difficult to deny the beauty of both the hardware and the software of modern-day Macs.

We have all received the emails. You know the ones. Someone telling you they can guarantee a number one listing in Google for only $99. You may think something sounds a little fishy, and you're right! At the same time, you may begin to wonder, 'why doesn't my business show up when I search for hair salon'? There are many reasons why you may not show up.

Who's Eavesdropping On Your Data?

Pretty much everyone is aware that computer viruses exist and can cause damage to the files on your computer if contracted. However, viruses are not the only threats computer users have to be aware of. There are just as many dangerous, if not more dangerous threats out there in cyberspace. Most viruses are created as a form a braggadocio. A programmer wishing to make a name for himself in the black hat world of cracking an hacking may create a virus to prove how astute his programming skills are. There is usually no financial motive in this.

Another threat exists that is built on the greed of illegal profits. Enter spyware. Spyware is used to unknowingly install programs on your computer that track data such as what web sites you are going to and send it to unknown people/companies. Spyware can also install a keylogger program on your computer that can record anything you type. This can include passwords, credit card numbers, social security numbers and other sensitive data. This data is usually sent to a third-party and then sold to the highest bidder.

Recently, while doing some website updates for one of my clients, I was asked how to save an iWork file (Mac) as a Microsoft Office document. After a few questions I realized my client had just purchased a new Mac and was evaluating both iWork and Microsoft Office before deciding which one to purchase.

My advice: 'download OpenOffice, it's free'.

Finally! Dynamic Data Design launches a redesigned website. Friends and family used to make fun of me when they saw my website (c'mon, it really wasn't bad). They likened it to a mechanic driving around in a beat-up old car. Anyway, after two years of anticipation (or not), I am excited to present the new Dynamic Data Design Website.
